The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of the Indian Ministry of Defence cleared the purchase of six more Lockheed-Martin C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft from the US under its Foreign Military Sale (FMS) programme. The deal is subject to final clearance by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) before a contract is signed with the US government. The C-130 Super Hercules aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are operated by Number 77 Squadron. This newly acquired fleet of the IAF has been in the headlines in the recent past for its highly effective and praiseworthy role in the relief operations in the wake of the natural calamity in Uttarakhand.
The Super Hercules did also make waves when it carried out a historical landing at Daulat Beg Oldie, the world’s highest airstrip located in Ladakh in proximity to the volatile Sino-Indian border.
