Romania is making a decisive move in modernizing its air defense with the approval of the sale of 32 F-35A Joint Strike Fighters by the United States. Valued at approximately $7.2 billion, the deal also includes F135 engines from Pratt & Whitney for each aircraft, along with a spare engine. This acquisition marks a first for Romania, which expects to receive its initial jets by 2030. With a potential addition of 16 more aircraft to form a third squadron, Romania could become the largest operator of F-35s on NATO’s eastern flank.
Why Is This Deal Strategic?
The agreement also includes comprehensive logistical and maintenance support, as well as navigation, communication, and cryptographic equipment, ammunition, weapons, simulators, and training for pilots and technical personnel.
