The Gharial: A Unique Crocodilian
The gharial, or Gavialis gangeticus, is one of the most easily recognizable crocodilians, known for its long, narrow snout. Unlike other crocodile species, which typically keep their young in burrows or on land, gharials have developed a special way of transporting their babies. They carry their little ones on their backs, shielding them from the dangers of the river’s strong currents and predators. This method has proven vital for the species’ survival.
Once widespread across the Indian subcontinent, the gharial population has significantly dwindled. With only around 650 adult gharials left in the wild, conservationists are focusing on safeguarding their rapidly diminishing habitats. The Ganges River, home to part of the remaining population, is critical for their survival, though it too faces environmental threats like pollution and human interference.

Mukherjee captured this moment in a wildlife sanctuary along the Ganges River. The photo shows the father gharial ferrying his baby crocodiles, who are clinging to his back in a rare and emotional display of parental care. Despite facing challenges such as illegal fishing, habitat destruction, and pollution, conservation projects along the Chambal River have shown positive results, with several breeding seasons yielding a strong number of hatchlings.
As Patrick Campbell, Senior Reptile Curator at the Natural History Museum, remarked, “The survival of each juvenile is critical, and behaviors like this are essential for ensuring that the next generation can thrive.” These behaviors are key to the gharial’s survival strategy, highlighting the importance of continued protection for both the species and its habitat.
