Rolls-Royce has been selected by Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) to provide Trent 700 engines and support to power 12 Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft for the Armée de l’Air.

France has become the fourth nation to select the Trent 700-powered MRTT aircraft, following the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Singapore.

The Trent 700 is ideally suited to military operations, delivering outstanding fuel burn, emissions and noise performance, together with low observability and resistance to foreign object damage. In “hot, high and severe” environments the Trent 700 has consistently proven itself to have the best time on wing performance, up to double that of its nearest competitor.

Bob Stoddart, Rolls-Royce, President Customer Business – Defence, said: “We are delighted that the Trent 700 has been selected to power the A330 MRTT aircraft to be operated by Armée de l’Air. Following the recent signature of the Franco-British Future Combat Air System (FCAS) Feasibility Phase contract, selection of Trent 700-powered A330 MRTT aircraft by both nations demonstrates that they remain committed to maintaining their strategic air power capabilities using the world’s most advanced equipment.”

He added: “Rolls-Royce has a long and proud history of powering aircraft for the French armed forces. These include the C-130 Hercules, C-160 Transall, Atlantique II, E-2C Hawkeye, Tigre and Lynx helicopters and, more recently, the A400M through its partnership in the TP400 engine.”

The Trent 700, the only engine specifically designed for the A330, is the market leader on the platform and has secured over 75% of announced engine selections on the MRTT variant of the Airbus A330. More than 1,500 Trent 700s are either in service or on order.
