Flight Safety or Aerospace Safety is an ongoing concern for all organisations involved in aviation. In recent times, significant progress has been made in the field of flight safety in terms of new ideas, methods and techniques developed for aircraft accident prevention and investigation.

Towards achieving a safer flying environment, the Indian Air Force has indigenously developed a software called Accident Probability Factor (APF) Calculator which is one of its kinds and is used for prediction of Flying Accidents. The unique software was developed by experts at the Directorate of Aerospace Safety, Air Headquarters using actuarial science under the aegis of Air Marshal AS Karnik Director General (Inspection & Safety) who launched and dedicated the Online APF Calculator to the IAF today.

The APF Calculator uses mathematical algorithms to analyse archived data of last thirty years for prediction of accident probabilities. Aviation safety specialists from Army, Navy, Coast Guard and DGCA attended the launch ceremony at Air HQ (RK Puram).

This is an outcome of the IAF’s constant endeavour towards using effective preventive measures at its bases to reduce flying accidents This program is of critical value for the IAF and the concept can be adapted for accident / disaster prevention by agencies involved in this area.
