These massive tracks, dating back 70 million years to the Cretaceous period, belong to hadrosaurid dinosaurs, a group of herbivorous giants known for their duck-billed skulls and immense size.

Among the newly discovered tracks, one footprint measures an astonishing 92 centimeters (3 feet) across, ranking among the largest hadrosaurid footprints ever recorded. Even more remarkably, the team found a 24-meter (79-foot) long trackway with 13 fossilized footprints, providing a rare glimpse into the movement and behavior of these prehistoric titans. This discovery has sparked excitement within the scientific community, not only for its sheer scale but also for the possibility that a nearly complete skeleton of one of these giants may still be hidden beneath the sands of Mongolia.

Colossal Footprints of a Prehistoric Titan

Hadrosaurids were some of the largest herbivorous dinosaurs of their time, roaming the prehistoric landscapes of North America, Europe, and Asia. The newly discovered footprints suggest that these giants thrived in Mongolia and may have grown even larger than previously thought.

One of the most astonishing aspects of this find is that the largest footprint—measuring nearly one meter across—is believed to have belonged to a giant Saurolophus, a genus of hadrosaurid dinosaurs previously discovered in Canada and Mongolia. According to the researchers leading the study:

“The largest footprint is believed to have belonged to a giant Saurolophus, estimated to exceed 15 m (50 feet) in total body length, surpassing even Tyrannosaurus and Tarbosaurus in size.”

This revelation suggests that Saurolophus may have been among the largest bipedal dinosaurs to ever exist. The presence of such enormous footprints in the Gobi Desert indicates that this region was once home to some of the most massive plant-eaters of the Late Cretaceous period.

A Trail of Footprints Tells a Story

Unlike fossilized bones, which provide insights into a dinosaur’s anatomy, footprints reveal how these creatures moved, walked, and behaved. The discovery of 14 trackways, including one previously found in 2018, has allowed scientists to analyze posture, walking speed, and even possible herd behavior—details that skeletons alone cannot provide.

The research team’s follow-up investigation, conducted between June 1 and June 15, 2024, led to the identification of three of the largest hadrosaurid footprints ever discovered. The newly uncovered trackways offer compelling evidence that these massive herbivores traveled in groups, possibly migrating together in search of food and water.

“As a result, we discovered new trackways, including three of the largest hadrosaurid footprints ever found and a continuous sequence of 13 fossilized footprints.”

This continuous 79-foot-long sequence of tracks represents a rare snapshot of prehistoric movement, allowing scientists to estimate the gait, speed, and stride length of these enormous creatures. Such trackways provide invaluable clues about dinosaur social structures—suggesting that some hadrosaurids may have traveled in herds, much like modern elephants.

Could a Record-Breaking Fossil Be Waiting to Be Discovered?

Until now, the largest known hadrosaurid skeleton belonged to Shantungosaurus, a dinosaur discovered in Shandong province, China, measuring over 16 meters (52 feet) in length. However, the newly discovered Mongolian footprints raise the exciting possibility that an equally massive—or even larger—hadrosaurid skeleton remains buried beneath the Gobi Desert.

Given the sheer size of these footprints, paleontologists now believe that uncovering a complete skeleton in Mongolia could rewrite our understanding of hadrosaurid dinosaurs.
