Austria is in advanced discussions to purchase 12 M-346 training aircraft from Leonardo, aiming to modernize its air training capabilities. This decision comes after the retirement of the Saab 105, which left the Austrian Air Force without suitable training jets to prepare pilots for the challenges of modern combat aircraft like the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The M-346: A Multi-Capable Aircraft

The Leonardo M-346 is a state-of-the-art jet trainer designed to provide realistic training conditions for future fighter pilots. This twin-seat jet is powered by a Honeywell F124-GA-200 turbofan engine, allowing a maximum speed of Mach 1.2 and an operational ceiling of 45,000 feet. These performance features make the M-346 a versatile tool capable of simulating the flight conditions of modern fighters.

Technical Capabilities of the M-346:

  • Digital flight control system with quadruple redundancy.
  • HOTAS system (Hands On Throttle And Stick) for improved maneuverability.
  • PARS (Pilot Activated Attitude Recovery System) for enhanced flight safety.
  • Embedded Tactical Training System (ETTS) that allows simulation of sensors, weapons, and threats in both real and virtual environments.
  • Capability to carry armament for light combat missions.

Advantages of the M-346 Over Competitors

Compared to alternatives like the Czech L-39NG, the M-346 offers more advanced training systems and enhanced combat capabilities, especially with its M-346FA variant, which includes radar and air-to-ground capabilities. These features ensure a smooth transition to fighter jets like the F-35 or Eurofighter Typhoon.

A Potential Partnership with Italy

Austria is exploring the benefits of a partnership with Italy for this purchase, which could include joint pilot training and favorable purchasing conditions. While financial details are still under negotiation, Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner indicated that a decision could be made by the end of 2024, depending on the outcome of upcoming elections.

Towards a Modernized Austrian Air Defense

The acquisition of the M-346 is part of a broader strategy to modernize Austria’s defense, which also includes recent purchases of AW169M helicopters and C-390 Millennium transport aircraft in collaboration with other countries. These efforts aim to enhance Austria’s operational capabilities while optimizing costs through international partnerships.
